I often suggest to students that they should soften the soles of the feet to improve their grounding. Then they become aware of the support of the earth below. We often use tension in the feet, as if we're trying to detach ourselves from the earth. Perhaps this is because life is so fast-paced that our feet, literally, barely touch the ground. I think there is something more going on, it's as if we don't own our right to be on the earth and feel its support.
To help connection to the earth, you can do this practise at any time. Perhaps incorporating it into other activities like meditation, Tai Chi or Qigong. Simply let your mind drop down, through the body, to the feet. Just taking your awareness, in this way, to the soles of the feet will lead to a change. Don't overthink it! Just let your soles respond to the gentle attention and enjoy the feeling of owning your place on the earth.
