Over many years I have pondered about the correct way to sink in Qigong and Tai Chi. The usual way that this is taught is to focus on tucking the tail under. The vestigial tail of the human is a few very small vertebrae which extend down and forward when you push your hand down the spine, then pelvic girdle and reach the end of the bone line. You will not feel the tail bone with your hand. You will however feel it if it is damaged, it is very painful.
I find that a focus on tucking the tail bone down and under causes tension in the area, something that will block free flow of energy to the legs. I am not discarding the idea but I am now starting my sinking with attention to the hip joints, you could say the groin or inguinal folds. This whole area is called the kwa or kua (pronounced kwa). It is not superficial, I aim to feel deep into the kwa to feel space around the hip joints as I start to sink. This is instead of quickly folding in the kwa as I sink. Finding this gives me more sinking, as if to squat, try it!
